Government Institution “L.T. Malaya Therapy National Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” is one of the leading institutions in the system of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, where fundamental and applied studies in therapy are carried out, methods of optimal pharmacotherapy for the main diseases of the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, respiratory system are being developed, the epidemiology of chronic non-communicable diseases and their multifactor prevention are being studied.

Nowadays, 396 people (including 80 researchers) work at the Institute. The scientific potential of the Institute consists of 16 Doctors of Medical Sciences, 56 PhD (in medicine and biology), two of them were awarded the honorary title of Honored Doctor of Ukraine, and one was awarded the honorary title of Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine.

The Institute includes 10 research departments:

- Department of the Study of Digestive System Diseases and their Comorbidity with Non-communicable Diseases;

- Department of study of aging processes and prevention of metabolic-associated diseases;

- Department of Ischemic Heart Disease, Metabolic and Cardiopulmonary Disorders;

- Department of Prevention and Treatment of Emergency Conditions;

- Department of prevention and treatment of kidney diseases in comorbidity conditions;

- Department  of  Arterial Hypertension  and  Prevention of  Its Complications;

- Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacogenetics of  Non-Communicable Diseases;

- Laboratory of Immuno-biochemical and molecular genetic studies;

-Department of Scientific-organizational Work and Medical Information with the Library;

- Group tehniichnoho engineering and metrology service.

Scientists of the Institute are the first in Ukraine:

- confirmed the concept of systemic damage to the hepatitis B virus of organs and tissues based on the study of virus markers in the liver tissue, peripheral blood cells, and bone marrow;

- found various types of fibrosing reactions in the liver tissue in chronic viral hepatitis B and C;

- put into practice the identification of Helicobacter pylori by various methods;

- introduced a non-invasive diagnosis of early forms of precancer and stomach cancer;

- identified the main hemodynamic, neurohumoral and structural manifestations of prehypertension and the factors of its progression at the population level;

- determined the complex effect of low doses of ionizing radiation from the Chernobyl NPP liquidators on the body's systems (cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, etc.);

- determined the prognostic significance of the complex of the palmar dermatoglyph for predicting the risk of the hypertension development;

- established the key role of interleukins 1 and 2 in the pathogenesis of hypertension; found the specific contribution of opioid peptides, chymase, neuropeptide Y, leptin to the development of various clinical and pathogenetic forms of arterial hypertension;

- developed non-drug methods of treatment of hypertension based on quantum and efferent therapy;

- conducted an in-depth study of the influence of cellular and humoral blood factors on the progression and clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis and destabilization of ischemic heart disease;

- conducted systemic thrombolysis with streptase in the Kharkiv region (1984);

- began the study of immune-inflammatory cytokine-dependent mechanisms of progression of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.

Nowadays, a scientific work of the Government Institution “L.T. Malaya Therapy National Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” aims to:

- the study of chronic factors and the development of methods for early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the most common diseases of the cardiovascular system, kidneys, respiratory and gastrointestinal tract with the implementation of the research results into health care practice;

- development and implementation of scientific and organizational forms of integral prevention and therapeutic assistance to the population;

- development and implementation of a unified research methodology.

The scientific work of the Institute’s team and its employees has been repeatedly awarded (nationally, by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine), including:

- the medal "20 years of independence of Ukraine (G.D. Fadieienko, 2012).

- Prizes - Academic Prize in Clinical Medicine of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (L.T. Malaya, Yu.G. Gorb et al., 1995), the Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine named after M.D. Strazhesko (L.T. Malaya, T.Yu. Makarevich et al., 1998), the Prize of the Presidium of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (V.I. Volkov, 1999, 2000), the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology for series of fundamental scientific works in cardiology (L.T. Malaya, 2003), the Prize of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (V.V. Ryabukha, 2007).

- diplomas and certificates: diploma of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine for the best research work (L.T. Malaya, S.A. Serik, T.A. Chenchik, 2000; Yu.S. Rudik et al., 2003; V.I. The State Pharmacological Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine has approved the Government Institution “L.T. Malaya Therapy National Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” as the clinical base for conducting research on drugs in multicentric and limited clinical trials according to international GСP standards.

Over the years, renowned scientists and organizers of health care who made a significant contribution to the development of therapy worked at the institute: O.M. Bilovol, V.F. Moskalenko, Yu.M. Vasilyev, B.Ye. Volos, E.Ya. Nikolenko, V.I. Tseluyko, M.I. Yabluchansky et al. Highly qualified specialists and high-tech equipment, a combination of comprehensive examination and the possibility of providing specialized medical care of various therapeutic orientations (cardiological, gastroenterological, pulmonological, nephrological) can solve the most important task of therapy - treatment of the body of a sick person in general.  

During the period of the Institute’s existence, 31 doctoral and 158 candidate theses have been completed. The results of scientific research are reflected in 110 monographs, 147 guidelines and more than 2.5 thousand articles in professional journals. The Institute is the founder of professional scientific and practical publications: “Ukrainian Therapeutic Journal”, “Modern Gastroenterology”, which are registered in international scientometric databases. Since 2017, with the support of the Institute, the journal “Rational Pharmacotherapy” has also been published. The Institute’s web page has been created; Internet sessions and on-line webinars are held regularly; the Institute’s museum works.
