The Institute of Therapy is a clinical base for the Department of Hospital Therapy and Clinical Pharmacology of the Kharkiv State Medical University.
The history of the Department as an independent structure begins in 1877. For many years the faculty was directed by outstanding scientists who are not only the pride of our country, but also of global medicine: professors
I.M. Obolensky, F.M. Openhovsky,
K.M. Georgivsky, S.G. Jakushevich, S.Ja. Steinberg, V.M. Kogan-Yasni,
R.I. Sharlaj, Academic L.T. Malaya, etc. Since 2004 the Department is directed by the Honored worker of science and technique of Ukraine, Director of Institute of Therapy under the name of L.T. Malaya ÀÌS of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Oleg Babak.


The most important and perspective field of scientific researches of the Department is studying of humoral mechanisms of regulation of hypertension, atherosclerosis, different clinical types of ischemic heart disease and its complications, chronic circulatory insufficiency; on the basis of the above mentioned studies, newly developed diagnostic methods and perspective pathogenetic-treatment have been created.

Thanks to the cooperation with the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy of the Institute of Therapy under the name of L.T. Malaya ÀÌS Ukraine, since 1986 in the Department of Hospital Therapy of the Kharkiv State Medical University a cycle of clinical pharmacology course was introduced. Since 2003 the Department of Hospital Therapy and Clinical Pharmacology is the basic faculty of clinical pharmacology in Ukraine.

Throughout the existence of the Department, more than 120 monographs and collections of scientific works were printed.

The scientific and pedagogical potential of the Department comprises 1 corresponding member of Academy, 3 professors, 8 senior lecturers and 4 assistants.

Annually the faculty of hospital therapy and clinical pharmacology trains about 700 students, post-graduate students and clinical interns from Ukraine, neighboring and distant foreign countries.
